Radioactivity is a major problem in this day and age. Only recently, the Fukushima disaster in Japan highlighted to the world the importance of treating radioactive waste properly. Radioactive waste is generated during the production of nuclear power. When nuclear fission is carried out, radioactive waste is generated. In many cases, radioactive waste is also generated during certain types of research. Needless to say, radioactive waste is harmful to most forms of life and the environment. In many countries, government agencies are required to regulate nuclear waste in order to prevent harm to the environment or life forms.

With the passage of time, the radioactivity in any material tends to decrease. Because of this, radioactive must be kept in isolation. There are dedicated facilities designed to keep nuclear waste isolated for a significant period of time until the radioactive levels reach or fall below the safety threshold. In most cases, the amount of time it takes for the radioactive levels to decrease usually varies, dependent upon the type of material as well as the radioactive isotopes. It might be a few days or millions of years.

The events in Chernobyl and Fukushima are clear indicators that nuclear power poses a major threat. However, nuclear power is clean and efficient, which is why many governments have carefully regulated nuclear power generators and continue to use them.
